Every project is different—every client, every space, every story.
And yet, there are certain pieces I find myself reaching for again and again. They’re not trendy extras. They’re timeless, grounding elements that instantly bring a room together.
Think of them as the quiet backbone of my design process: items that add depth, warmth and a sense of completion, no matter the style of the home.
10 must-have items I never skip
- Oversized area rug – Always one size larger than clients expect. It anchors the room and makes everything feel intentional.
- Bouclé or textured accent chair – A sculptural piece that adds form and softness at once.
- Statement lighting – Whether it’s a pendant, floor lamp or sconce, lighting sets the mood before anything else.
- Linen or cotton drapery – Layered window treatments that diffuse light and create dimension.
- A mix of throw pillows – Not matching, but collected: square, lumbar, plain, patterned.
- Natural wood side table – Small, versatile and grounding; perfect for layering with books or objects.
- Ceramic vessels – Large-scale or small clusters, matte or glazed, always adding organic texture.
- Books as styling layers – Coffee table books aren’t filler; they tell stories and invite pause.
- Art with presence – Abstract or photographic, chosen for impact, not to “fill a wall.”
- A textured throw – Casual, tactile, and never folded too perfectly. It softens edges and invites use.
“The best styling pieces don’t shout for attention—they whisper confidence into the room.”
Why these items matter
It’s tempting to chase trends or fill every corner with something new. But over time, I’ve learned that a well-chosen set of essentials creates far more impact than constant reinvention.
These pieces bring balance, dimension and a sense of ease. They’re adaptable across styles—from minimal to eclectic—and they create a rhythm that allows the bolder moments to truly shine.
Building your own foundation
If you’re curating your home, start with the pieces that make you feel grounded. A rug that defines the room. A chair that invites you in. A light that changes how the evening feels.
Because in the end, it’s not about having everything. It’s about choosing the right few things, and letting them do the quiet work of making your house feel like home.
